dell is contracting the service to oustside companies like wang and unisys. are they omnipresent? i don't know. is dell restricted to sell computers in places where wang/unisys has a center, or additional independent service centers are needed to complement? well my speculation that dell will save a lot of money by buying cpq is of course twofold: the main part is service. dec was as omnipresent in the world almost to the extend of ibm. by having dec in the pocket means that all dell computers can be serviced at variable cost only thus increasing margin. the second part is owning 20 mil shares of cmgi through cpq saying hastala vista to alta vista. after july 16 dell has at least 4 billion shares to get cpq, AND cmgi if it wants to (but dell will have a portion of cmgi through cpq anyway).
