Mr. Bernie Ashe reports

The U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office has awarded AIT a $1.5-million contract to provide its GenIE software for the passports overseas project. GenIE will be used to produce passports for British nationals within a number of foreign and commonwealth office posts around the world. The goal of the passports overseas project is to ensure that British citizens around the world are issued passports that are compliant with international standards, and that are identical to those produced in the United Kingdom. For enhanced security, the passport will contain a digitized image of the applicant rather than the traditional photograph.
"This is another example of our strategy of targeting near markets for our traditional core competencies," said Bernie Ashe, president and chief executive officer of AIT Corporation. "We have extensive experience with passport issuance systems for national government headquarters, but this is our first major win in the consular market. The trend we're seeing indicates that the consular market will be a good fit for AIT's technology."
AIT recently announced its intention to target the consular market in an alliance with AMITA Corporation. AIT and AMITA provide complementary software products that can automate the full range of services offered by a consulate, including passport and visa issuance and consular case management. The passports overseas project is the first undertaking that will be completed under the alliance. AMITA will provide customized reporting features that will enhance the functionality of GenIE for the consular market.
Based in Ottawa, Ont., AMITA is a software development and IT consulting firm that is a leader in electronic service delivery solutions.
