Tejek,

Re:" My impression from the cc is that the cpu/motherboard sets that intc marked down below $100 were old, much less than, state of the art sets that had been in its inventory and that probably intc was glad to unload. Since intc is a company that executes flawlessly and rarely errs, I can not imagine that there were more than maybe 10 or 12 of those extraneous sets to unload. My point is that there is a limit to how many of those leftover sets exist in intc's inventory and that eventually they will be gone. Once that happens, then I do not believe that intc will be as willing to mark down as much the new sets coming off the manu. line. So I suspect they will not be the factor they were last quarter. Do you agree?"

Not really.

I agree the older chipsets were flushed out of the system.

But Intel is not stupid.

By eliminating margins for chipset vendors and MB makers they start out with perhaps a whitney MB cost of $30. So they can live with a $100 combo.

AMD MB's are likely to run $50-60 (the integrated chip sets are priced at $30 alone).

So inherently Intel has a $20 advantage in the low end boxes.

AMD has to counter this somehow by eliminating margins for the chipset and MB vendors.

This is a non-issue for Tier 1 guys as they have their own MB suppliers.

But tier2/3 and white box guys don't get the sweet MB deals that the big guys get.

So I see this is a major strategic problem for AMD that they need to handle.

Regards,

Kash
