Where two crustal plates collide - one rides up and the other sucks down. The downsucker is being subducted. Perhaps my adaptation into an intransitive verb is incorrect.
Off the Washington-Oregon coast the Nort American (?) plate rides over the Pacific plate. That's the Cascadia subduction zone and it's overdue for a magnitude-nine earthquake. (Like the great Alaska quake of '64. Anchorage?) We're talking tidal waves in the tens of meters in some spots.
