Ascend is gone! Long live Ascend! I've just returned from the meeting where the conclusion was foregone. As I came home I swung by Ascend on a whim and there I saw a group of employees with banners in hand, ready to drape over the Ascend signage. The Canvases had Lucent's logo and name. A TV cameraman was there to record the passing of the torch. Surprisingly a lump appeared in my throat as I turned around and came by a 2nd time...already one sign had been draped over. At the meeting we learned that the logo on the roof of the main building, readily observable from planes taking off from the nearby Oakland Airport, had been removed a week or so ago. The marker One Ascend Plaza likewise will disappear. The large sculpture of the logo will not disappear - it will be relocated to the plaza which the buildings surround, readily visible too from the cafeteria named Dot.Commissary...a fitting reminder of the company's origins even though it will spearhead the new Internetworking Division of Lucent Technologies and will be headed by an Ascend executive. ASND, a stock that beguiled and bedeviled as well, we will miss ye! Dee Jay
