Hate to say things twice, but gold is currency. I've seen gold dust Spent, here in Colorado 1999(metro Denver) for groceries, gas,& clothing.
No, before you say it, it is not as widely accepted as "the coin of the realm". While I did not see the expenditure, I have seen shiny jewelers balances behind bars and near the register at some eateries, and been told they are in use there also.
No, I don't do it, never been decent at pannin, so don't know if taxes are paid or not.
