Satellite connection systems were devised in an era very different form today when they are going into service. Then -late 80's- there were no de-regulation, privatization of third world telecoms, call back was not eating in revenues, old tariffs agreements of the ITU still ruled, no WTO agreement etc, etc.

I mean the whole telecoms world changed.

Today when those services are being rolled out is a different ball game. Perhaps this explains why the Iridiums of this world are having a hard time. Mi tres centavos.
