I don't think I've contradicted myself. Cisco products support a wide range of technologies...some are standard, some are not. It's up to the user to deploy the technologies that are most appropriate for thier network. Many times the propriatary technologies will provide the user with some performance advantages...if not they wouldn't be deployed and the technology and the issue it's proprietary nature would be moot. Fact is, many networks deploy CSCO products in a "de-facto" architecture because of the performance benefits. What could be argued is why doesn't CSCO open up these protocols to become standards.... I suppose right now there is no reason to do so. There is nothing better out there and thus no compelling competitive reason to do things differently. If there was a threat than things might be different. Microsoft has done similar things. Now with Netscape, Linux, and Java they are being forced to be more flexible with pricing and exposing their technology.
