My comments only apply to the Nasdaq as I'm not really familiar with shorting Canadian stocks.

the market makers can not manipulate a stock that is actively traded.

That's not really true.... look at all the high flying Internet stocks.... that's what I mean about stocks manipulated by market makers. They are actively traded as well but that doesn't make them harder to manipulate... those stocks are manipulated every day... that's one of the reasons they have such wild swings.

I think you are talking about stocks that are thinly traded (stocks that have a low average daily volume

Yes it's true that thinly traded stocks are easily manipulated but I was referring to the actively traded stocks on the Nasdaq. There are a number of articles which, if I can find them again, will explain in detail how the MMs actually manipulate markets and in certain cases have no choice but to manipulate them.

Remember market makers are there to make a living for themselves not just to provide liquidity. The MMs on the Nasdaq are quite good at screwing the longs and the shorts and it is well known amongst traders that the key to success there is figuring out what the MMs want to do next. If going long is not what the MM has in mind, you're screwed no matter what... that's just the way it is on the Nasdaq.

Lola:)
