More than a week ago I reported on the use of a new type of infantry weapon undergoing a tryout at Fort Belvoir. As one who saw it in operation put it: "it could revolutionize the infantry by increasing exponentially the grunt's firepower." I could only hold my breath, and now it appears that what was reported just may have been the Aliant weapon with a VLNC battery. I am quite sure that I cannot fathom entirely the military usage. Nonetheless, as a military friend just put it, because the infantry can't use laser-blinders for fear of the Geneva Convention and unforseen retribution, it is stuck with a handheld weapon whose time is past due. The military is ready to jettison a tool whose prototype is now more than thirty years old. For those who have held VLNC for many months, there may finally be room for great optimism. Indeed, we may be on the threshold of something entirely unexpected.
