They're not up to anything new, Blue. This is the third session in a row that they've tried to get a flag-burning amendment through. They didn't make in in 1995 or in 1997; looks as if they may actually succeed this time.

But why? It isn't as if people were burning flags on every street-corner these days. This isn't the '60's. And it seems to me that an amendment specifying that the Congress shall have the power "to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States" doesn't belong in a Bill of Rights.

I rather like the remark (quoted in the Washington Post) made by Rep. Gary Ackerman of New York during the debate: "'The real threat is not the occasional burning of a flag, but the permanent banning of the burners."

Has a nice ring to it...
