of course each additional "9" comes at a very high cost - aCharles Schwab uses a bank of IBM and Hitachi Mainframes...are they more available than Unix Systems? maybe but its a lot cheaper to buy Unix based systems and most ecommerce applications arent availble on mainframes - and im not aware of an OS/390 port of Quake either.

The real question is whether or not your business can absorb 200 hours/annum of scheduled downtime and/or can take a 24-48 unscheduled crash. In EBAY's case that unscheduled outage cost them $3-5 million U.S. ; more than enough for 2-3 mainframes. The perception is the cost of the UNIX box is less but when you consider lost revenue from downtime the E10000 is probably a more expensive solution.

OS390 has UNIX 95 Branding and supports the full Lotus Domino suite (web server etc) and Java/C/C++ --- the new G5/G6 mainframes are where it's at if you want 5-9's uptime. UNIX still is a second tier server solution.
