Actually Barb,
Most folks won't don't use former addicts anymore for anti-drugs campaigns. Producers and funding agencies have ben burned too many times by using former addicts in their campaigns only to find out they begin using again and thus their media campaign is wasted (and worse, counter-productive). Also, there is a credibility issue when using such celebrities or athletes for these campaigns, especially if targeting children. You end up making the bet that these role models will stay "positive" role models for ever, and frequently you lose that bet. CSAP (which is part of HHS) and the US Dep't of Ed, both have pretty strict policies for campaigns that they fund regarding this. I have served as a project director for federal grants from both agencies to produce ATOD media campaigns, and the research they have compiled in this arena is pretty compelling.
