VoiceStream to Buy Omnipoint gain size to take on rivals

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- John W. Stanton, the scrappy chief executive of VoiceStream Wireless Corp., is poised to take control of a national wireless empire that could challenge AT&T Corp. (T: news, msgs) and Sprint Corp. (FON: news, msgs). The Wall Street Journal reported that Stanton signed a deal on Wednesday valued at more than $2 billion to purchase wireless company Omnipoint Corp. The marriage will join the two largest U.S. digital cell-phone providers that use the wireless technology known as GSM, or global system for mobile communication. The combined company will boast licenses that cover 17 of the nation's top 25 markets. Many now expect Mr. Stanton to move quickly to gobble up the country's remaining regional GSM players, creating a national behemoth.
