Then it could be months or even years before it issues.

My IP attorney told me it was between 3-4 years for software patents. Mechanical ones are in less demand theoretically could issue in months.

the number of useless patents we have been granted.

:-). Depending on your business, even lame patents can be used as leverage if you have good attorneys.
