The Vancouver Sun reports in its lead front page story in its Friday
edition that the federal government is planning to establish a research and
testing centre for fuel cells in Vancouver as part of a new national
strategy aimed at making Canada the world leader in technology that is
environmentally friendly. Sun reporter Petti Fong and Southam reporter Joan
Brydon say that Burnaby-based Ballard Power Systems, which developed the
fuel cell, has made a research centre one of the key requirements that must
be in place before the company will build a high-volume manufacturing plant
in Greater Vancouver. Ballard is already considered the industry's best
hope for cars that are powered by fuel cells. Two giant American makers of
cars, Ford Motor and DaimlerChrysler, have invested more than $1-billion in
Ballard, betting on having such cars on the market by 2004. Brent Sauder,
executive director of the non-profit Advanced Systems Institute, says the
research centre will create a nucleus for companies to grow around.
