Perception International (PI) reports recent news items suggest the
electric car is dead. In fact, the battery-powered car is dead. PI
analysts believe that what will happen is that the parts suppliers will
turn the automobile into an electric vehicle by gradually and steadily
replacing mechanical components with electronic ones. As the process
continues, PI notes that a 42-volt battery will have to replace the
current 12-volt battery as standard equipment to operate all the
electronic equipment. They believe that the result will be that a
battery pack will be unable to power the car, and manufacturers will
have to turn to the fuel cell. PI mentions the following companies:
American Honda Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler AG, Swatch Group, Delphi
Automotive Systems Corporation, General Motors, Siemens AG, Exide, Lear
Corporation, United Technologies Automotive, United Technologies,
Johnson Controls, Inc. and Ballard Power. Full report dated June 9,
1999 by Perception International, Ltd.
