zbyslaw,
I'll try to be nice here.
Gary you are a dreamer.
When you post condescending remarks like this it won't help your arguement.
China has already made huge commitment to ATM infrastructure, and is buying as we speak.
Indeed China may have a commitment to ATM. I was referring to the article comments.
Freemantle said that China's telecommunications companies, some of the largest buyers of Cisco products, are likely to shift towards using Internet technology for telephone services.
"Internet telephony costs are only 10% of a traditional phone line" and companies are starting to offer long distance calling services over the Internet at huge discounts to traditional long distance carriers, said Freemantle.
Seems to me that IP telephony to millions of homes could be huge..and if it's CSCO it's a huge upside. SO, where is there error in my judgement?
Second, some carriers are moving to pure IP over glass...bypassing the overhead associated with ATM. MPLS, IP Precedent, RSVP, addresses the QOS issue. There was a recent announcement by UUNET that it is removing it's ATM core in favor of highspeed routing. So, although I agree with you that ATM and IP can co-exist it is not a requirement.
Pure IP can not migrate TDM to packet based network.
Really? Why not? I'd be interested in this answer....greatly. Careful though. ;)
ATM can carry IP , but not reverse
Really? Care to tell us all why? Have you read the G.lite specification? I agree with you that, in principle, it make little sense but...well....it's being done. Read the spec. Go to the ADSL forum web site. Then let's talk again.
