68K floating point is 80 bit precision, whereas double precision PowerPC is 64 bit, and single
precision is 32 bit.

I didn't think of that. Quite frankly, I was shocked at how slower the G3 was--I thought that the cache might make up for the fpu. I figure that the monumental slowdown is due to SoftFPU competing for registers while the G3's fpu is making it's second pass to calculate a 64-bit double. On the other hand, I could be horribly wrong.
