It is depressing, of course, although I am not sure that the presence of anti- Turk sentiment is indicative of the feelings of mainstream Germans. Also, I am not sure what to say about the dual nationality issue, which, as MNI said, is the major impediment to German citizenship. Look, as an American, and the descendant of immigrants, I take a dim view of citizenship based on ethnicity, and it is a particularly sensitive issue in Germany, of course. However, I also understand that assimilation is an issue. Although we tolerate separatist groups, like the Amish, in the United States, we obviously could not survive as a nation without most immigrant groups becoming Americanized, at least by the third generation. Since the social problems of assimilation are greater in a country like Germany, it may be that legislation should reflect the problem to some degree, and not actually encourage much of an influx...
