Uh, Frank, the answers are yes and yes. The new "next generation" DLCs are conducive to hierchical networking, supporting ONUs and other interfaces, not just subscriber interfaces on the output side.

The second "yes" needs to be qualified. Some ONUs like Reltec (Marconi?) can output fiber and coax as well as twisted pairs. I had forgotten about those guys when sending a quick answer. So some ONUs can be viewed as supporting/replacing DLCs with their functionality, but not all ONUs are capable of this.
