Combination of factors ended the Soviet Union:

(1) Gross mismanagement of the economy and natural resources
(2) Devoting 55 percent of economy to military
(3) Devoting substantial resources to fund client states and
terrorist organizations
(4) Inability of the Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact nations, etc.
to recover from the severe 1980-1982 recession - the crash
in natural resource prices sapped the Soviet Union of hard
currency

Reagan's threats of military buildup and the entrenched Soviet
military-industrial complex made it difficult for the Soviets to
reallocate resources even when their leaders realized they needed
to restructure their economy.
