It is funny, farm- raising is good for catfish, but it is terrible for oysters, which are barely worth eating farm- raised. I imagine it is hard for you to get good shellfish, especially raw bar, without spending an arm and a leg. See, there are definite advantages to living on the East Coast! I went to the New York World's Fair in 1965 (when I was 9), and the Maryland pavilion focused on the Bay a lot. Since I was used to eating steamed crabs, it was actually the first time I had a soft- shell crab (in a sandwich). In Washington, the Southwest waterfront has many stalls selling all kinds of seafood, although mostly shellfish, and most supermarkets have pretty extensive fish counters. Of course, in Annapolis, we are blessed with almost the best prices on stuff from the Bay (sometimes you can get a better price by going someplace like Deale, which is the center of a lot of the packing). We even have lobsters, although they are not as big as in New England. But we have to import shrimp and crayfish...Can't have everything... |
