I recall vaguely his infamous meandering convention address (in '88, I believe) but it was so boring that I probably started reading (I am masochist enough to watch both conventions, but not so much to pay attention to absolutely everything:-)). It is clear that some people are not qualified for college, or lack the interest. Besides, virtually anyone who wants can go to college now, although not necessarily the college of his choice...I read an article in Rolling Stone magazine about Clinton way back then. William Greider, their resident Democrat, was into some big- time butt kissing. P.J. O'Rourke, their resident Republican, clearly didn't like him much, but for some reason was bending over backward to be fair (very uncharacteristically). But the truly interesting thing was Hunter Thompson, who had also been sent to Little Rock for this interview. He hated the guy, it smelled all wrong to him. He caught on to the Mafia- esque entourage, and the calculated insincerity, and also noticed that Clinton kept scrutinizing him worriedly. Thompson may be a bit of a wacko, but he is sensitive to bull, and boy, he warned his readers to steer clear of this guy. Of course, it didn't do much good... |
