Depending on the contract the vendor can be wholly responsible for OS patching, maintenance etc. DEC (VMS) and Stratus (FTX) used to provide this turn-key service with remote dial-in monitor and on-site staff.

Looks to me as if EBAY should migrate to a more reliable environment; if that's better Sun solution then so be it ... unless taking a 3-5 million dollar ding for down time is part of their customer satisfaction strategy.
