Any idea what "Real-Time" means these days?
Before web etc. anything better than 15 minutes was great. Now
with the net and phones, pagers, television tickers etc the
definition has become a little blurred.

1) How can CNN for example offer a "real-time" ticker when only about
ten stocks are visible on the bottom of the screen at any given
time? There are thousands of issues trading.

2) How can a pager deliver real-time quotes when I know for a fact
that digital pages are delivered to a buffer at the transmitting
site and can be delayed minutes due to other user paging traffic.
This que advances in the order the page is received.

3) How can a web site offer "real-time" quotes when it's jammed with
users in the prime of the day. My experience is sometimes 10s
of seconds to minutes to no response try again later.

It seems like the term "real-time" is being abused by everyone - what
is excellent real-time response? 1 minute, 5 seconds, 1 millisecond?

Seems like if there is an advantage to the best real-time data or
awareness of the whole market, it ought to come from a satellite data feed, a dedicated land line (maybe) or a wireless broadcast source, un-cluttered with shared page traffic from doctors, businessmen etc.

I think the real key is in real REAL-TIME (INSTANT) market moving NEWS like SEC filings. My broker always gives me a free real-time quote before I trade anyway. How can you read the future in a real-time price quote any better than a delayed quote? Real-time market moving
news does provide a edge however. IFN begins providing real-time SEC filing news next month. Seems to me the value of a real-tme price
quote will quickly be going to 0.
