Bill -- You were right, it's MCI. Again, I think we've been dropped between the PR cracks by being the technology behind the NEC/Australia/America modems and yet not mentioned. Peter Taylor was interviewed for a magazine a few months ago and I remember being told this was the case. I also had it confirmed by the telecommunications CEO I met at the RS conf.

In a technology trial that began in July 1996, two channels of digital TV are being delivered to ten households. The trial involves use of MPEG2 video transport over existing copper cable using 6 Mbit/s ADSL transmission to a digital set top box, implementation of active and passive POTS splitters and implementation of a totally integrated end-to-end solution over a telecommunications network. This trial marks the first deployment of real-time 6 Mbit/s MPEG2 switched digital video in the United States. It is significant because the quality of switched digital video is much better than that of regular cable television. . . .

Peter Taylor, group general manager of NEC Australia, whose development team provided the system through NEC America, commented that he was very pleased with the success of this advanced trial.
