>> Cisco is nowhere near able to resolve the software mess the telcos are in. It has nothing in optical. It has nothing in wireless. It has nothing in telephony.
Mr.Fun, I haven't seen your posts for a while, it's great that LindyBill managed to drag you over here. Judging from a poll I took a few weekends ago (very small sample), 87.5% of us own csco stock, and 25% own lu. As you'd expect from Gorilla Hunters, none of the sample owned asnd.
Have you been keeping up with Cisco's acquisitions since last October? Don't some of them address their deficiencies, just as lu's acquisition of asnd addressed theirs? I've seen some papers they've presented in the optical area, and I get the impression they are actively looking at the oc48 type stuff.
Imo, Cisco has a couple of real strengths in the voip race:
1. If I may quote from an expert, Their domination of internet class routers is driven by the difficulty in writing an implementation of Border Gateway Protocol that is totally compatible with Cisco's fairly byzantine version.
Mr.Fun, you've just hit on one of the key advantages of a Gorilla, which is what we've based this thread on. IOS is a monopoly; Lu's attempt to counter it is similar to linux vs. windows, which is proving to be a very difficult and lengthy task.
2. John Chambers team may be the best in the world at acquisition and integration, which is csco's most effective form of r&d.
There is absolutely no question that both csco and lu will be dominant players in the new world of telephony. I picked csco because I already owned them as the Network Gorilla anyway, but what bothers me about lu is all brick and mortor and debt that they carry around. They're great, but I think csco will generate wealth for its investors at a faster rate.
Please come by more often, Mr.Fun. Many of us avoid the csco thread because of their outbreak of Multiple Thread Moronus, and we get great insights from your posts.
