More from the Chairman of First Albany, Plug Power, who is also the chairman of MKTY
JUNE 22, 1999, TUESDAY

PREPARED TESTIMONY by
GEORGE MCNAMEE
PLUG POWER, LLC
BEFORE THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES

"Fuel-cell power will be a major global industry, one that the U.S. can dominate. Distributed residential generation will be the first mass market. Worldwide, there are over a billion households without electricity. Hundreds of millions more are served by laughably unreliable grids. Our global distribution partner, GE Power Systems, believes that just as developing countries are leapfrogging central phone networks and going directly to wireless, so will developing countries go straight to distributed generation".

"Generators are so unreliable, in states like Alaska (the Senate Chairman's home state) they are often deployed in triplicate. Plug Power is working with Sandia National Laboratory and the University of Alaska in Fairbanks on the Alaska Remote Power Program to develop fuel-cell systems that can operate on diesel. Next year, Plug Power will deliver a demonstration system running on diesel fuel."

"Plug Power partners have now invested or committed $100 million"

"A national standard on interconnection would help all distributed generation technologies. We suggest an immediate role for the federal government to play. Working with national labs, we would propose a program to deploy units across the country to allow state and local regulators to gain real experience with the technology, accelerating the adoption of rational codes and standards at the state and local levels."
