I'm confused by your comment about the run rate. Let's start over. :)

To get the run-rate, simply multiply the most recent quarterly earnings (excluding one-time events) by four.

If you're thinking that there is no way to get a pro-forma earnings rate other than looking up specific earnings reports, you're right. Similarly, the only way to track the comparative earnings of a company that has bought another company, such as Siebel which bought Scopus, is to add the two companies' earnings reports from year-earlier quarters or delve deeply into the recent reports to get a thorough understanding.

To your knowledge, how does the Fool try to help less sophisticated investors deal with this sort of thing

By educating them about the importance of doing the research and showing them where to find the data. They taught me, so they must be able to teach anyone. :)
