I think Van Gogh had been through it all long enough not to be impulsive about it. But I agree with you that it happens. And that sucks. I think the young man I spoke with you about in pm might have been one of those. That's one reason it mattered to me to think that he didn't have a chance to think "oops, I didn't really want to do that" before he shutdown.

And the "cry for help" may be a clique now, but it's very true. But from the people I've known, it's not always to do with looking to others. It's wanting to die but not wanting to die, so you half-ass the job. The turning point for my sis was when she didn't half-ass it but did it all the way. She really should have died. She really meant to. The docs expected her to, or at least to be seriously brain-damaged. Neither happened. I'll never forget the look of surprise when she opened her eyes and realized she wasn't dead. She thought, "daym, I really did it and I'm not dead." She figured she wasn't meant to be and she's never looked back. Being who she is, she's had hard times since and life isn't easy. But there's a solid ground below her that wasn't there before.
