Compaq/IBIZ?

In the article below that I ran into in PCWeek. It mentions Compaq moving to smaller computing devices. The article says "The terminal, which Compaq is developing with an undisclosed partner, will run Windows CE". Is the undisclosed partner IBIZ, after all IBIZ has been hanging out with Mircrosoft & Conexant and the PC Expo. That I would think is very telling.

Compaq Computer Corp. is convinced that special-purpose PCs and computing appliances have a place in corporate computing.

The Houston PC maker is developing a number of appliances to fit under its NonStop eBusiness strategic umbrella, the first of which will debut in the fall.

In September, Compaq (CPQ) plans to launch its first Windows-based terminal, said Michael Winkler, vice president and general manager for the company's PC Products Group, at PC Expo here this week.

The terminal, which Compaq is developing with an undisclosed partner, will run Windows CE.

Next: a 'slimmed-down' appliance

"What's coming are unique form factors and unique targeted-purpose devices. In many cases, those will augment [Compaq's PC] products," Winkler said.

Compaq will follow the terminal with a "slimmed-down" appliance that runs only office applications such as a word processor, he said. Compaq is also working on several new mobile devices that combine cellular phone capabilities and Web access, Winkler said. The company recently began shipping Handheld PC Professional and Palm-size PC devices based on Windows CE.

In addition to mainstream business users, Compaq will target new handheld devices at vertical markets such as manufacturing, Winkler said.
