It's getting that one cannot distinguish on the surface what is meant by "high speed broadband access" these days, when compared to the emerging capabilities of "NGDLCs." I say this because one of NGDLC's most salient characteristics is its ability to support the former, i.e., broadband access.
[You will note that I have acquiesced to the current terminology being used in this context, today, allowing that broadband might also include super-128 kb/s streams to the residence and to the small business. It still pains me, however. What's being called broadband today wouldn't even qualify as wideband, or even upper narrow band in some instances, in an earlier era.]
"Can we look forward to other large orders like this from other carriers? If the SBC/Ameritech merger is approved, is it likely they will have a big order for NGDLC to upgrade their network? What about Europe? Will they have to upgrade in a big way?"
Yes, you bet; yes, a much larger one; and yes, in most cases. All IMO, of course.
In some ways I made my feelings on this known several posts upstream, when I cited how the ILECs are now responding to the challenges that Armstrong created for them.
