The post below (originally made to the SIBI board) triggered and interesting discussion on patents of drug discovery tools and what may be fair or not. Regardless of the particulars of the PFE/SIBI dispute, and of the motivation of PFE, I think this "fight" raises a number of far reaching issues, including "royalty stacking," how valuable "tools" (which may include DNA when used as part of a broader drug discovery program) really are, and thus how much fees, and royalties their inventors may deserve, etc, etc.

The outcome of disputes such as these may have implications to other "tool making" companies in biotech. These companies, at some point, were even thought to have discovered the "magic" formula of taking out a lot of the risk in drug discovery and development, without giving up too much of the upside.
