Terrence, I agree, however, vouchers are a major step in the right direction. The one thing that worries me about total privatization is that some kids would be left out entirely. I believe before we passed laws forcing all kids to attend school, there was a significant proportion of young girls who were told, "don't waste your time with an education".

This, I believe, is one of the main differences between conservatives and believers in pure capitalism. Some laws can help promote important concepts as a nation, education is certainly one of those. The trick is in how to limit the government influence and power.

It seems to me the framers believed concepts like education should be handled by the states. That would be another start in the right direction. Simply closing the Department of Education would probably result in dramatically higher literacy rates in less than five years. By almost every metric you can come up with, since the Department of Education was founded, education levels have declined.
