Jill, for some reason, I'm not completely sure why supplies are so tight now other than the increased demand for notebooks has put a squeeze on the vendors. It must be an industrywide capacity problem coupled with the expense and difficulty of manufacturing. I'll ask one of the notebook guys at work next week.

Here is a (somewhat dated but still relevant) article.

pcworld.com

Moore predicts that many notebook vendors, including Gateway, will make the leap to 15-inch-plus notebook screens months after Dell pioneered the market with its Inspiron 7000 last year

Notice, Dell beat Gateway to the punch on designing 15" LCD's into their notebook lines... this generated a lot of sales momentum for Dell... Dell isn't always a laggard they may sometimes appear to be <gg>.

But the issue still remains...

The bottom line for desktop flat-panel displays is that they will continue to appeal mostly to deep-pocketed early adopters. "They're still three times as expensive as CRTs, but they're not three times better,"

So, if Dell has an offering in 6 months, they will be in long before the market for the all-in-one really gains momentum. My guess is that this form factor will have ~10% penetration into the world-wide desktop market by 2002.... (about 20M units per year).
