A long time ago in America, many of the people who held office were transitory. They did not make it their career. They came from farms and private industry, served for a time, then returned to their real lives. As the federal government grew, so did the parasitical bureaucratic structure. One result of this increased power was the inclination of many office seekers to make it their full time career, amass power, and attempt to wield it to the detriment of individuals.

A classic example of this abuse of power can be seen in the many attempts by Congress to create an federal tax on income during the late 1800s. This measure was defeated again and again until it finally passed early in the 20th Century and was implemented during 1917 -- the same year as the Soviet takeover in Russia.

Hmmmm... is that a coincidence?
