PETERBOROUGH, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1996--BYTE Magazine today announced the results of its 1996 BYTE Readers' Choice Awards, with top honors going to IOMega's Zip Drive in the hardware category and Microsoft's Windows 95 in the software category. Gateway 2000 was deemed the "Company that provides best service." The annual awards are considered a leading indicator of product acceptance and satisfaction among "real world" users. "If you want to know which products mark the front edge of technology in common use today, ask BYTE readers," says Mark Schlack, editor-in-chief of BYTE. The results of BYTE's 1996 Readers' Choice Awards were compiled through a random poll of nearly half a million technically savvy subscribers who were asked to identify the best products in over 40 hardware and software categories.
Best Hardware Product In the general hardware category, BYTE readers selected IOMega's Zip Derive as the best hardware product available. Other winners include the Gateway 2000 P5/166XL - Best Desktop Computer (PC), Hewlett-Packard 9000 - Best Workstation, IBM ThinkPad 760 - Best Laptop/Notebook Computer, and the NEC MultiSync FG for Best Monitor. Best Software Product In the general software category, BYTE readers voted Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system, 1996 Software Product of the Year. Other winners in the software category include Microsoft Word for Windows - Best Word Processor, Aldus PageMaker - Best Desktop Publishing, Microsoft PowerPoint - Best Presentation Graphics, Oracle Server - Best Client/Server Database, and Lotus Notes - Best E-Mail and Workgroup software.
