Unfortunately, that is how it is priced. It's all on one phone line, but I pay $50 for the DSL hook up + standard monthly phone fee (I think around $18.95)+ $20 for ISP to access the net through the line. This is where cable has the advantage because $40 includes the pipe hook up and the ISP. I think that DSL costs will get cheaper as cable gets built out and becomes an option to the masses so they can compete.
I don't think I fit the typical fat pipe home subscriber profile (Hell, I didn't even own a computer last year), but I imagine that it would be people that work at home, investors, etc. My mom's neighbor writes software programs for medical billing and thanks to Lotus Notes and his DSL line, he now has the server at his house where all the programmers involved nationwide can access info, make changes, etc. and he doesn't need to travel as much as a result.
