I am basing this on the last leg of fulfillment. Most people make multiple purchases when going to a brick and mortar shopping center. The gas consumes is the trip there and back in a lighter weight vehicle such as a car compared to a truck. I am making an assumption that online shopping items will be delivered by various delivery firms. Therefore, various trucks will have to make stops at individual residences. The argument can be made the truck is in the neighborhood regardless so this is a more difficult comparison than I first thought. Possilby critical mass buying via e-commerce may make the gasoline consumption less.
