RE: >>the only problem is that SNE is giving the drive away as an incentive to sell their computer. This doesn't give IOM a profit for the drive<<

Sony doesn't need to identify Iomega to give a $99.00 rebate, they're identifying Iomega's Zip drive with their system as a reason to buy, an us too marketing program.
Sony only paid + / - $40 for an OEM Zip yet they're giving a $99.00 rebate.

This looks to me that Sony America has been given the go ahead to build their systems with Zip because HiFD isn't going to make it. Could it be that what Sony was trying to do with HiFD isn't possible. In any case by the time they could OEM qualify HiFD for this season they would have to have started shipping this past March and guess what here's yet another holiday season that Sony will miss.
The time frame for any kind of meaningful introduction looks like early next year and for any volume mid year 2000.

IMVHO Sony's HiFD is dead.
