I agree. For the record. Sun does offer 7x24 remote monitoring, they
also offer patch and maintenance services. They also offer
professional services, or partner with a EDS/CSC etc to completely
outsource the running of the customers IT department. However,
the customer has to be smart enough to understand what they are
capable of, and what they aren't. In many cases it's the latter that
they don't understand about themselves. The problem stems from the
fact that these large Unix servers have to be administered like
mainframes .ie. strict policies and procedures being the main
ingriediant. If the customer would provide the same environment
that they would for a mainframe these outages would be non-existent.

And to second guess your reply... Then why not buy a mainframe to begin with?

Simple... the large Unix servers of today offer many times the processing power at a fraction of the cost. The customers should take some of the savings and invest in training,
hire experienced managers, and engineers to run the datacenter.
OJT is not the way to go when there is significant dollars at risk.
