Re: TXN/Libit

Hi WS,

The press release states With this acquisition, TI now has the technology to deliver a complete solution to cable equipment manufacturers and their service provider customers.
Well, I find this to be very interesting. I'm wondering why, if TXN has a complete solution, that companies like AT&T are backing away from packet-switched unsplittered telephony over their new HFC systems?
And why is Level 3 choosing to use the LU Softswitch in its plant as a viable method to blend VoIP to the PSTN? I guess it must be that Michael Armstrong and Jim Crowe are real fools, cause all they had to do was to get down to Dallas and pick up their wares off a shelf.

So what category of ware is this? Vapor...ware, slide...ware or PR....ware? A few DSPs won't solve a lot of the daunting problems of congestion, QoS, and handoffs to the PSTN.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the PR author was being a bit coy about which version of the CableLabs spec they were complying with. we all know BRCM is writing DOCSIS 1.2 at the moment.

And how about this marvel of language: its core modem technologies are available and shipping today and are low-power, CableLabs Certified™ Cable Modems silicon that allow cable-access equipment manufacturers and service providers to accelerate the move to Internet Protocol (IP) telephony by using cable bandwidth. Translation: The easy work is done, we're gonna let someone else figure out this telephone nightmare.

Anybody else? Ya, you betcha, INTC and CSCO both have their eyes on this prize. And they realize that there is going to be a heck of a lot of sophisticated and possibly profitable cable modems sold in the next 5 years. CSCO has the lead, as far as software development is concerned. INTC is currently producing microprocessors that are so far advanced of what the normal business person or websurfer needs that it is in great need of finding a new killer app. Cable modems/DSL modems are very much in demand right now so it could be that INTC would want to try to move in in a big way.

BRCM has a great product line, terrific inventiveness and a 21st Century business structure. What it clearly does not have is a monopoly in its arena. I'm betting it is one of several winners, going forward.

Best, Ry
