Victoria Gate, MD.,

Yesterday we had a BBQ which my 14 year old invited a number of HS guests to. I did a little sampling at the table and found that four out of five had AOL accounts, and the fifth was coming on line this week. Two of them had parents whose interests and other pursuits caused them to have a second account with someone else, but the AOL account was "theirs" in those cases. Namely, it belonged to the kids.

You guessed it, the fifth in my sample will be going on line with AOL. Of course, I couldn't let a peaceful dinner go by without introducing some additional q and a, much to the chagrin and squirming of my daughter, notwithstanding.

I found that none of them held out any anxieties over not having cable modem access, nor did they understand why I was grilling them in the first place. Seems that the grid lock on the dialups is a matter of history for them, because logging in nowadays is nowhere near the grief that it was early last year (thanks to the $300MM to half billion upgrade performed by AOL at that time).

These young folks are quite content with the service they are using, in the modality they are using it, namely that of chat and gif exchanges. Granted, this was not exactly what one would call a conclusive survey, and the sampling method could be more scientific, but there is a message in here somewhere. Comments?

Regards, Frank Coluccio
