On a day in which volume will likely be ether-thin, expect stocks to float higher at the open.
But whether they'll hold those gains is really anyone's guess. With investors unwilling to take positions ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting, trading will be light and, therefore, volatile.
At 8:10 a.m. EDT, the S&P 500 futures were up 1.8, nearly 4 above fair value and indicating a positive open. The 30-year Treasury was up 2/32 to 87 22/32, putting the yield at 6.16%.
ynot - as for banner ads and other revenue streams, what is evident is that the internet focus will be changing from ndividual consumers to business-to-business needs. The estimated market for the latter category is about 10 times the consumer market, and although that will grow and evolve nad become more targeted, one cannot create an economy based on selling things near cost and generating revenues just from advertising. Most of the major names are looking to find the business-to-business niche for which they can provide some information or product or service that can be charged to the customer company. Whether that is materials auctions, personnel, transportation information, packaging, research/placement, contact and contract negotiation, etc. it is coming.
Initially the ad revenue was considered important, but unless your business is advertising, there is no primary revenue stream there. Portals and consolidators will play a mjor role in any scenario we construct, but the as part is not consequential. Look at AOL's income statement and compare the $20/month subscription charge for 10 million users versus the advertising revenue ( and then consider how many people really want /use those clickthroughs).
There is even a place now that provides its own browser that displays ads and pays up to $40 a month to use it if you are active on it 40 hours a week and look at one page no more than 3 minutes. I know 17 kids so far who signed up for it and then run it in the background to a network of sites they connected via redirects to basically automate the hit counts for them. Think that deal will last long?
