One reason the consumer spent more is because he perceives, through inflation worry talk, that prices might be rising. Therefore, they rationalize to themselves, buy it now while its cheaper, enjoy it now when its within reach. If the Fed were to make a bold statement that prices are going down across the board on imports and products produced in the US, you can be sure a percentage of consumers would hold off and save their money for tommorrow's good deals.
