events, experiences, momentarily-developing minds, are conceived as the only concrete realities.
Since reality is a recurring topic lately-
For me, events often seem unreal until I write about them, when they then take on meaning for me. ("There are no events but thoughts and the heart's hard turning.") Which probably explains why my stories seem perfectly accurate and truthful to me, but Dan laughs at them and asks why I can't just tell things straight. ANd also why I'm very spacey and not quick at all in real life- because it hasn't happened yet for me- I'm not there until I relive it.
However, I am now greatly reassured that this isn't a unique quality or a symptom of mental incompetence. Last night I came across this sentence in the Bayley book-
"Only memory holds reality."
A lot of writers apparently have this same experience, particularly the Romantics, who discovered taht "to remember and write was to create their lives...that the actual experience was nothing beside it, a mere blur always on the move, always disappearing."
Also this weekend came across a reference to "Esoteric Christianity."
LIke your Process Philosophy and your search for "soulmates", I keep trying to find something that will allow me to stay within the structure of Christianity, where I am comfortable and where most of my friends have their spiritual basis, but helps me overcome my inability to accept it as it is presented. Somehow I wound up with this term from somewhere.
THe little I read felt rather New Agey though.
I know the New Age movement is laughable in many ways, but it also seems touching and sad to me, a generation searching for meaning but not finding it in the older mythologies. Joseph Campbell wrote that moral breakdown was occuring because people had no new mythology to hold onto. We are between beliefs. |
