Government IT Services Board Recognizes Telos' and Enterworks' Virtual DB Solution as Best Practice for Web-Enabling Technologies

ASHBURN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 1999--

Al Gore's Access America Plan Spawns First Ever

Center of Excellence for IT Award

Enterworks(SM), the leading provider of software for enabling the virtual enterprise, and Telos(R) Corporation, a worldwide business solutions provider, today announced that their data integration system created for the US Army has been recognized as a best practices solution for applying Web-enabled technologies to government. Showcased at Virtual Government 1999, the Government Information Technology Services (GITS) Board praised the U.S. Army's Ammunition Materiel Release Order Tracking System (AMROTS), which used Enterworks' Virtual DB(R) as the key technology behind it.

AMROTS, a solution built by Telos, is used to gather comprehensive, enterprise-level information across separate inventory, depot and transportation systems to track ammunitions in-stock, on order and in transit. AMROTS is based on Virtual DB(R), which makes information simple to retrieve, view and analyze, by providing a common view of disparate, legacy databases and allowing access through a standard Web browser.

"The Army's AMROTS implementation truly exemplifies improved speed and accuracy, as well as substantial cost savings through the strategic use of Web-enabled technology," said Dennis Fischer, Commissioner, Federal Technology Service, General Services Administration, a GITS Board Champion and co-director of the CEIT. "It thoroughly embodies the goals of the GITS Board."

The GITS Board, born out of a mandate by Vice President Al Gore, is a government-wide organization responsible for accelerating the development and implementation of the government's IT infrastructure. Its sole purpose is to follow the Executive Order of the President and ensure continued implementation of the information technology recommendations of the National Performance Review. In addition, it aims to identify and promote the development of innovative technologies, standards and practices among agencies, state and local governments, and the private sector.

The Center of Excellence for Information Technology (CEIT), sponsored by the GITS Board, is a clearinghouse for proven IT best practices in the public and private sectors. The CEIT, to be formally launched in the near future, will showcase present and future information technology applications and demonstrate how strategic utilization of technology can improve productivity and streamline government. The inaugural CEIT award honors organizations demonstrating the strategic use of Web-enabled technologies to perform a wide range of business processes.

"The Center of Excellence strives to accomplish the goals set forth by Vice President Al Gore, which emphasize the creation of an 'electronic government' and a new standard of applying Internet technology best practices," said Jim Flyzik, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Systems (DASIS) and Chief Information Officer (CIO), The Department of the Treasury. Jim is also the vice chair of the GITS Board and co-director of the CEIT.

"We are thrilled that Virtual DB(R) has been recognized by the Government Information Technology Services Board as a key enabling technology for creating an 'electronic government'," said Robert Lewis, president of Enterworks. "Our goal is to serve the needs of government organizations by providing a data integration solution that delivers the speed, agility and competitive strength needed to succeed as a virtual enterprise."

Dave Aldrich, COO of Telos, concurred. "Telos is committed to delivering effective solutions to the problems that interfere with critical business processes. Our partnership with Enterworks helps us address a vital concern facing most large organizations such as the federal government: how to correlate data from multiple, legacy systems and turn it into useful information."

Virtual DB(R) provides companies with a quick solution to integrating, managing and distributing information throughout the enterprise. The product accesses information from more than 70 different data sources and creates unified business views through familiar Web browsers. Its unique, object-oriented MetaCatalog maps enterprise data to semantically meaningful terms for rapidly prototyping, building and modifying business views without impacting existing systems. Telos' domain knowledge of logistics processes and systems provided the insight to effectively develop the MetaCatalogs required for AMROTS.

Telos Corporation, a global solutions provider and parent company of Enterworks, drove the submission process behind the Center of Excellence for Information Technology award. Telos' years of experience in the Army provided the insight to effectively develop the MetaCatalogs required for AMROTS. The CEIT highlighted both Telos' and Enterworks' contributions to the success of the project.
