couldn't agree more about the smart computing site. note the link i placed in this post: #reply-10272171 . their 'reference series' publications are excellent!

netscape communicator is running better for me now than ever before. using the troubleshooting tips on those links i provided recently has really helped me turn the corner. also i've had norton crashguard disabled for several days as an experiment. some people swear that crashguard causes what it tries to prevent. ;) and i'm gleaning a ton of info from the netscape newsgroups. just like an operating system suffers degradation over time, so too does a browser. i think that my netscape data files had become corrupted, and creating a new user profile (and deleting the old) is what has served me best. that and specifying a temp directory by adding a line to the autoexec.bat file.

i'll probably upgrade to 4.6 now that i have a good basis from which to work.
