Since I share some of the guilt for starting this discussion, let me make a comment on "patriotism."

I would never call myself a "patriot." One of the reasons I would not is because too many of the people who do call themselves that seem to be boasting about their "patriotism," and implying that other people are not "patriots."

In other words, the term is too often used in a self-serving fashion, to justify/rationalize own's own set of beliefs, and to impugn those of others. For example, I am sure that the person you describe in your post -- the one who advocates scrapping the Bill of Rights, etc. -- would, in fact, insist that he is a "patriot," and that you are not because you question his convictions.
